From Carson Ting:
It is my way of giving back. I want to give shine to a community that often feels stuck between its glorious past and a challenging present. It is a way to help preserve our culture and language, and to inject new energy into this community for the next generation.
Every week when I drive my kids to Chinese school, I enter through the gates from the west. This feels very metaphorical to me. The gates truly represent the Chinatown community. As soon as I pass through them, I am reminded that I am reconnecting with my roots.
The design is structured around those gates and houses a fun mosaic of six components. The Lion is paired with the Lucky Fortune Cat. Although the cat is Japanese in origin, it is ubiquitous among Chinese merchants. The Mahjong brick, the Har Gau in a bamboo steamer, the Koi from the Chinese Garden, and the tea cup all come together to represent the unique layers of Chinatown. Finally, the "Ting", a traditional open-air pavilion, crowns the piece. It is a subtle nod to the Garden and also to my family name.
Through the pure excitement and furious speed of creating this work for a community I deeply care about, I created an unintentional Easter egg. Easter eggs have always been part of my signature design language, but in this moment the universe added another layer of storytelling, an unexpected detail that invites a closer look.
