Miffy (or nijntje in her native Dutch) was first drawn by illustrator Dick Bruna in 1955, inspired by bedtime stories he told his young son about a little bunny scampering around their holiday home on the Dutch coast. Bruna chose to draw her in a dress, and a little girl bunny was born.
Her now-iconic look—round face, two pointy ears, chubby cheeks, and those signature little black eyes—took shape in 1963 and has charmed children worldwide ever since. Miffy appears in more than 30 books, beloved for her simple, innocent, and ever-curious spirit.
The name "Miffy" was chosen simply because it's easy to say in any language: a small, friendly character who travels well across cultures. Fittingly, Bruna himself was born in the Year of the Rabbit.
