Fred Herzog photographed Vancouver's Chinatown for four decades. Vitality, by the Chinatown Storytelling Centre, finally pairs each image with the families and histories he couldn't have known.
From the 1950s through the '70s, Fred Herzog walked Chinatown, Strathcona, and Hastings Street with a camera, capturing an era in Kodachrome colour. His photographs are iconic. What they couldn't capture were the names, the families, and the histories inside the frame.
The Chinatown Storytelling Centre spent years finding those stories. In Vitality, each photograph is paired with the account of someone who was there: personal recollections, family histories, cultural context. Many of the archival images were shared by families directly, and have never been seen publicly before.
All proceeds support the Chinatown Storytelling Centre - an award-winning cultural hub and proud initiative of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, dedicated to the revitalization of Chinatown.
